Faas, Anthony

Anthony Faas was an active maker in Philadelphia from the 1840s – 1870s. Faas built a line of higher quality square grand and upright pianos under the name of 'A. Faas'. Although his firm enjoyed modest success for over 30 years, it was a relatively small-scale company that built only a limited number of instruments over the years. In 1850, A. Faas is listed as also building melodeons and accordions, winning first prize for his 'Concert Accordion' at exhibitions in New York and Philadelphia. One of Faas' most important patents was his 'screw clamp agraffe' which was designed to improve tuning stability in his pianos. A. Faas is listed as late as 1877, but appears to have gone out of business by 1880.
