BABCOCK, ALPHEUS, Est. 1810 in Boston by Alpheus and his brother Lewis
at 441/2 Newbury St. In 1814 the Hayt brothers joined the firm Appleton
was already a member. The name Hayt, Babcock & Appleton was used
after 1814. A. Babcock was affiliated with John Mackay in 1822 at 11
Marlborough St. Alpheus left Boston for Philadelphia 1829 to join J. G.
Klemm; Patented the iron frame in 1825, cross stringing in 1828 and in
1833 patented felt covered hammers.
