KNABE & CO., WM., Est. 1839 by William Knabe and Henry Gaehle in
Baltimore, MD. The original name was Knabe & Gaehle. William Knabe
gained complete controlin 1854 when Gaehle left the company William
Knabe died in 1864 and left the company to his two sons, Earnest and
William. In 1908 the American Piano Co. took control Wm. Knabe. In 1932
Aeolian purchased American and formed the Aeolian-American Co. The
factory was located in East Rochester, New York. Knabe became part of the
Mason & Hamlin Corp., along with Sohmer, Falcone and George Steck.
Mason & Hamlin stopped production in 1994. April 1996 Kirk and Gary
Burgett, owners of Music Systems Research bought the assets of the com-
pany and announced plans to continue production. In mid 1996 Young
Chang started building Knabe pianos for Mason & Hamlin. See Knabe
