Founded in 1973 on the campus of The University of South Dakota in Vermillion, the National Music Museum (NMM) & Center for Study of the History of Musical Instruments is one of the great institutions of its kind in the world. Its renowned collections, which include more than 15,000 American, European, and non-Western instruments from virtually all cultures and historical periods, are the most inclusive anywhere.

Pianos (European)
1: Grand piano by Manuel Antunes, Lisbon, 1767. Cristofori action. One of the earliest, best-preserved pianos known to survive. Ex coll.: Augusto Carvello Monteiro, Lisbon. Marjorie T. Rawlins Collection, 1990.

2:Piano by Anton Martin Thÿm, ca. 1815,Seven pedals: una corda, harp, bassoon, damper, strong moderator, medium moderator, and Janissary (bells and bass drum). Such special effects were popular in Vienna at the time, particularly among upper-class young ladies, who were expected to provide music to entertain their guests.

3:Square piano by André Stein, Vienna, ca. 1820-1830
FF-f4 (six octaves). Two pedals: dampers, moderator. Veneered in mahogany, the piano, decorated in the Classically derived French Empire style common in this period, features legs of a type found in ancient Roman furniture. Transfer from Harvard University, Cambridge, 1988.

1: Square piano by John Kearsing "from London" for John J. Rickers, 187 Broadway, New York, ca. 1825. Serial no. 857. FF-f4 (6 octaves). One pedal: dampers. Figured mahogany with rosewood crossbanding and brass stringing; gold-plate trim. Gift of Marilynn L. Collins, Flossmoor, Illinois, in memory of her father, Wyman H. Carey, pianist, 1981.

2:Square piano by William Knabe and Co., Baltimore, ca. 1865. Serial no. 4362. AAA-a4 (7 octaves). Two pedals: moderator, dampers. Gift of Loretta Loop Smith, Pebble Beach, California.

3:Upright grand (giraffe) piano by Schimmel & Nelson, Faribault, Minnesota, ca. 1889. Birds, flowers, and musical instruments engraved in gold. Arne B. Larson Collection, 1979.
