Challen upright piano dates from around 1849.
It is made from walnut with boxwood marquetry, ormolu mounts and pleated silk panels
The upright piano was developed from the upright grand of the early 19th century. Decoration of early 19th century pianos was generally rich; skill in carving, marquetry and inlay was of great importance to Victorian taste.
The Great Exhibition of 1851 established a new type of decorative object, the ‘Exhibition piece’ (often destined for Museums) of which this Challen piano is an excellent example. Each unique work was designed to advertise the manufacturer’s taste and ingenuity.
The Victorian upright provided one of the main sources of home entertainment until the First World War. Magazine illustrations of the period show people dancing to piano music, listening to recitals or gathered round the piano singing together. Music publishers seized their chance to supply this vast public, and countless copies of sheet music poured off the presses. By the end of the century the decorative schemes of upright pianos became less extravagant.
