Marcel Debut was born in 1865. He was the son of the famous sculptor Didier Debut. In Paris, Marcel studied under Henri Chapu at the Ecole des Beaux in Paris. From 1883 until the outbreak of World War I, he exhibited his sculptures at the Salon in Paris.
Marcel was a sculptor of both people and animals. His sculptures of people are the ones that earned him most recognition; however, he made a very well known sculpture of a deerhound. His very detailed sculptures were popular during the Romantic period, but they show impressionistic characteristics.
